Improv quilting workshop

Interested in improving piecing techniques but not sure where to start? This workshop can help! Our presenter will walk you through the steps to create three different improvisationally pieced blocks: wonky stars, wonky flying geese, and wonky log cabin blocks. Wonky piecing can seem intimidating, but Lisa will make the blocks along with you, and you'll leave the workshop with confidence in your improv abilities!

Presenting lisa swenson ruble of quilty zest

I was bitten by the craft bug early on in life, and have dabbled in drawing, beading, photography, and fabric. I learned to sew as a young girl, making clothes for my Cabbage Patch Kid, and then got into quilting about 22 years ago and never looked back. Modern quilting is my style of choice, and I particularly love improv piecing. I currently freelance in the quilting industry, designing, writing and editing patterns, and I also design and sell my own quilt patterns. Outside of work, I spend time hanging with my husband and three boys, ideally outside or playing sports, and yes, the boys all quilt too!

In the trunk show, Lisa will share the quilts that illustrate her journey from traditional to modern quilting. Each of her quilts comes with a story about the artists who inspired her work (Victoria Findlay Wolfe and Gwen Marston, for starters!), as well as plenty of close-up looks. She will also walk you through the process of sewing a wonky log cabin block, her personal favorite! If you're interested in exploring the no-rules world of improv piecing and the design doors it can open, this is the lecture for you!

Programs

Our guild is fortunate to present programs that feature world renowned artists and teachers. We have in the past and expect to have in the future, present many creative and talented quilting artists passionate about sharing their knowledge. Our programs not only inform but inspire. There is always something new to learn and a new area of creativity to explore. We try to present variety in our programs and encourage members and guests to move outside their own comfort zone to explore more of what quilting, as a unique art form, has to offer. We feel our programs do just that and are always working at bringing our members and guests informative, interesting and inspiring programs.
