About Heritage Quilters of South Suburbia

The Heritage Quilters Guild of South Suburbia dedicates itself to preserve and promote quilt making and its heritage. The art of quilt making has long fostered individual expression, creativity, knowledge and enthusiasm which is shared with others.

Monthly meetings are held at Redeemer Lutheran Church, 651 E. 166th St., South Holland, IL 60473 at 7 P.M. every third Tuesday, September through June except December. Board Meetings are held first Tuesday of the month.

What we do

MEETINGS

Business meetings begin at 7 P.M. September begins with an ice cream social where members visit and catch up from the summer months.

Speakers give presentations during October, February, March, April and May. Programs and workshops are given by notable speakers. November is Guild activity night with members demonstrating quilting techniques. A Cookie Walk is generally held as a fundraiser. January is service month and members work on projects. June is the Guild Pot Luck end of year celebration.

BYLAWS

GUILD ACTIVITIES

Quilters can work on the Opportunity Quilt committee which is our main fundraiser by designing, constructing and selling tickets for the drawing in October.

Workshops are offered in conjunction with the monthly speakers. Specific members run classes of their special skills.

Modern Quilt Bee meets on Saturdays to explore contemporary design.

Block of the Month is a challenge program. Blocks are completed and then raffled off. The lucky winner can then construct a quilt of the blocks.

Our Sewing Bee provides time before the meeting where members can work on projects.

The guild has an Accuquilt machine and templates for use by members. Arrangements can be made to use it before a meeting. Click here for an inventory of dies.

DURING THE MEETINGS

Members sign up to take turns bringing in treats to share before the meeting. While members snack and visit, they can look over the items on the Resale Table.

Members can bring in "treasures", priced reasonably for other members to buy. What doesn't sell can be moved to the "Free Table."

Show 'N Tell comes between the end of the Business Meeting and before the speaker. It is the most popular activity because members bring in the projects they are working on or finished.

COMMUNITY SERVICE PROJECTS

Heritage Quilters are committed to sharing the art of quilt making. Over the years, the guild has sewn duffle bags for foster kids. We provide animal mats for cats and dog shelters who have need for beds. Members have sewn dresses for little girls who are in need of clothes. Members have sewn for Project Linus and sewn lap quilts for senior homes.

SPECIAL EVENTS

Heritage quilters promote an active outreach. We participate in South Holland's Heritage Fest at Paarlberg Farm. Members donate items to sell and a quilt is donated for raffle. The proceeds are donated to the historical society.

Members have donated items for sale at Crete Days as a fund raiser.

Members have gone on bus trips visiting quilt stores and participating in shop hops.

Donated raffle baskets are often offered at meetings as fund raisers.
